Sulawesi earthquake/tsunami 2018

The disaster in Indonesia has claimed 2,100 fatalities and 680 are still missing. Moreover, 68,451 houses were damaged or destroyed displacing 222,986 people. AMURT Indonesia supports the disaster recovery by training kindergarten teachers in trauma reduction, self-care and creative activities for the children once they come back to school.

Harvey and Irma hurricane response

Harvey began as a major category four hurricane - the first to make landfall in the US in 12 years. It triggered flooding and many areas could be uninhabitable for months. AMURT has volunteers in the area and are appealing for cash donations.

Nepal

Nepal earthquake response 2015-2017

AMURT has been instrumental in normalizing school life for over a thousand students after the traumatizing 2015 earthquake. The initial focus was to make the schools useable again, so AMURT retrofitted 25 damaged classrooms, and rebuilt four new classrooms, in 13 schools.

AMURT and AMURTEL (Ananda Marga Universal Relief Teams) are responding to the floods in Louisiana that have now caused 13 deaths and has been labeled the worst US disaster since Hurricane Sandy. However, despite the severity of the situation, the disaster is not getting the attention that it deserves.

Typhoon Relief Response in Philippines

Thousands of people are feared to have been killed when Super-Typhoon Haiyan struck the Philippines early Friday morning with winds reaching as much as 310km/h (195mph), possibly the strongest ever to hit the country. AMURT & AMURTEL were already engaged in earthquake recovery in the area and immediately began typhoon relief.

Hurricane Maria response – Puerto Rico

Puerto Rico's Governor Ricardo Rossello described hurricane Maria as "the most devastating storm in a century" and said that Maria had hit the island's electricity grid so badly that it could take months to restore power. Spirulina to the Rescue in Horn of Africa

In the summer of 2011, the UN identified severe drought in the Horn of Africa. Affected countries in this East African region include Somalia, Djibouti, Ethiopia, Kenya and South Sudan. Considered the worst in 60 years, the drought caused a severe food crisis across the region, affecting close to 10 million people.

Teacher Training and Temporary Learning Centers in Nepal

The Nepali Ministry of Home Affairs confirmed a total of 488,789 houses destroyed and 267,477 damaged during the two earthquake period of April and May 2015. The death toll stand at 8,219 people and half a million buildings damaged or destroyed. In the most affected districts up to 80 % of the public schools are damaged or destroyed leaving most children out of school.. United Nations estimate 3 million people are in need of food aid. AMURT & AMURTEL volunteers are busy day and night providing basic supplies, such as essential groceries, tarpaulins and blankets, along with medical support through mobile clinics. In the first month after the earthquakes AMURT & AMURTEL has distributed food parcels to 15,300 persons, tarpaulins to 2,088 persons and 7,500 people have been treated by our medical volunteers. AMURT & AMURTEL is responding with relief teams in several locations and is appealing for donations.
