People living in the dry rural area surrounding the village of Dabar lack the necessary infrastructural components to achieve a decent standard of living. Prabhat Alloi Inc, a partner of AMURT, has been in West Bengal since 2008 working to combat problems including inadequate water provisions, poor hygiene, lack of educational opportunities, high rates of infant and maternal mortality, shortages of housing and clothing, lack of electricity, poor roads and pathways, and frequent drought conditions causing hunger. One village in the area is home to about thirty men and women suffering from leprosy, who are largely dependent on an inconsistent flow of government supplies.
An introduction to volunteering for AMURT & AMURTEL as well as some guidelines for managers. Includes application forms.

For almost ten years, Ananda Marga volunteer Steven Landau has run a weekly yoga program at Wake Correctional Center in Raleigh, North Carolina. The voluntary two hour class includes Ananda Marga instruction on yoga postures, philosophy, kirtan, and meditation. Once a month, the prisoners are even treated to a vegetarian meal. Many participants have responded positively to the classes, reporting less aggression and higher levels of relaxation and physical well being.
August 2011: Kenya’s drought has been declared a national disaster.
Ten million livestock have died, crops have failed and its now 35kms or more to the nearest water for people in the worst affected counties. Water sources remain unprotected and easily contaminated.
AMURT is currently setting up supplemental feeding for several thousand at-risk people (children under five, pregnant and lactating women and the elderly) in Samburu East District in the northern part of the country. Our recent community assessment identified further needs for water, sanitation and mobile clinics. We intend to develop with the community programs for remote food and water distribution, emergency bore holes, water source protection, child friendly spaces, mobile clinics and long-term capacity building through water harvesting, consumers’ cooperatives and a model farming project.
